It was a balmy 39 degrees for the J Day Offroad 2020 Winter Wick GP. The warm temps and fresh snow made for perfect winter race conditions. Andy Mathieu made the trip to compete in the Pro Vet class.
Andy put his KTM300 up front early in the first Moto and got himself a comfortable lead when he miscalculated the new tunnel jump and in his own words, “over jumped it by a mile”. “I was at least 30 feet off the ground and was prepared to flat land it and head straight to the hospital”. He rode the bike to the ground front wheel high and separated from it upon impact. To his surprise, he was able to stand up from the crash and run back to his bike. “The bike was actually still running”, he said with a smile on his face. Andy remounted and finished the Moto with a win.
As the day moved on, the affects from the crash started to show. Andy was able to muster up enough strength to line up for the second Moto and it proved to pay off. Once again he had a strong start and was running with the #877 of Shane Kelleher. Shane was going into the second Moto with a 3 score from Moto one, he settled in just behind him knowing that would be enough for the overall win.
Andy will take the next few weeks to mend after the crash. He is looking forward to his next event at Hemond’s Motocross Park in Minot, ME at the end of February.
Over the weekend another two wheeled rider flew the Team EJP Racing flag. On Saturday night Travis Steward was lucky enough to run his first ice race under the Team EJP Racing, ArtWorx tent at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland Maine.
After both heat races Travis was lined up 3rd from the inside for the main event and rocketed into the lead. He was able to hold off all 8 of his competitors for the first three laps but as soon as they caught up to lap traffic Travis took the wrong line and two riders moved to the front. Steward was unable to mount a comeback in the closing laps but still made his way to the podium with a 3rd overall.
